Repetition: A Tribute to David Bowie is finally set to be released on September 6. Duran Duran swaggers up to the plate to cover Boys Keep Swinging, and judging from this 30 second clip, they are not fucking around.

Oh, I can hear you. You’re saying, “It’s just a sample! You can’t tell if the song is going to be good just from hearing just a teensy little smidgeon. You have to wait for the whole thing!” And then, while giving you the John Taylor Smug Look™ I thrust one of my hands in your face with that lame, overly-dramatic-retro-Jerry-Springer kind of motion and use the other hand to press play on this:

And then you say, “Oh no they DI-int!” And then I say “Oh yes they DID.” And then we both say, “Holy shit! That sounds AWESOME!” And then someone uploads the whole track to The Internets and sends me the link (hint) and I instantly become best friends with that person forever. Or we can just wait until September 6th when you agree (either with your out-loud voice or maybe just the deep down in your soul voice) that Duran Duran does Boys Keep Swinging better than David Bowie ever did.

  Oh yes, I’m sure it’s entirely too much. But I’m going to say it anyway, in hopes that I can someday deliver a personal apology to Mr. Bowie while crossing my fingers behind my back.

I recall seeing the Bowie video when I was fairly young (probably like 4 or 5), and thinking the “women” were scary. I came around as I got older, thankfully!!!

Having gone back and watched/listened to Bowie’s BKS, it sounds like Duran took the basics and made it more lush and throbby (I like the fretless bass), although they left out the spirit of irony I hear in the original, but that’s okay. I wanna see Simon’s own dance moves to this!!

So yeah, it’s growing on me, like I thought it would. Whaddya gonna do?

Excellent assessment, Nancy… totally agree.
I was thinking about the dance moves as well and I would definitely put my money on Bowie there!

I am LOVING this! I do hate that it cuts off RIGHT when you really get into it and want to cut loose! I am DYING to see Simon’s campy moves to this one! And more importantly, the look on his face. You know he is ace @ making faces and it will be something to see him sing this one! This song had SO better be in the setlist for the next tour!
